There are some projects, albums, and tracks that I just can’t wait to share with you. It is especially true for those long in the making, from my favourite artists, teased years before. Such is the case with the latest release by Fernando Corona, whose music as Murcof I have followed since his solo debut in 2002 (before Martes, Corona participated in other electronic and even prog-rock projects). In 2008, I covered The Versailles Sessions, which I revisited in a “remastered” writeup here, covering the history of this Tijuana-born electronic musician. I was also honoured to [virtually] spend some time In the studio with Murcof, where you can peak into yourself for a list and photos of modular gear. Two years ago, in 2022, there was an announcement of a new project under the name Twin Color, diving into a futurist nostalgia of retro-synthesis, Blade Runner-esque apocalyptic melancholia, and all of those delicious things that feed your sentimentality. And I’ve been waiting ever since. Today, I’m happy to premiere a track from the upcoming album, tauntingly entitled Twin Color (vol. I) [presumably with another volume to come], which is finally due out in November on the French InFiné imprint. The production began during the first wave of the pandemic, drifting towards something romantic, evocative, and tastefully vintage. Perhaps initially, it was experimental. Perhaps it was playful indeed. But what finally came out two years later is a collection of gorgeous cinematic music, a track of which I am happy to share with you today.

Fight stems from a single drone sound I came up with on my trusty modular while working on a beautiful sci-fi exploration video game soundtrack back in 2019, it was called All These Worlds and was it being developed by a new indie game developer from Czech Republic called Quiet Dimensions. Sadly the project got cancelled well into it’s development, which was around the time I was working on the first Twin Color tracks, and I was left with a ton of unused music. Most of this music where sketches and ideas yet to be fully developed, one of these was the track now called Fight. Initially it was just that ever present metallic drone sound that ebbs and flows during the whole track. I thought it deserved more attention so I continued working around that sound adding arrangements and new sounds including my daughter Alina’s voice on that climatic second part, yelling “Fight!”. At the end it I thought fit nicely with the rest of the Twin Color material I had been working so far, so I put the final touches on it and off it went to join the party.

The single also comes with an official video directed by Simon Geilfus, using visual material from the duo’s multidisciplinary A/V performance under the same name, which premiered at Mutek Montreal at the end of August 2024. This release is the first in a series of collaborations between InFiné and IRCAM, a French institute dedicated to studying and researching music and sound, particularly in avant-garde and electro-acoustic art music. IRCAM has been the home to many influential composers, including John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, and Karlheinz Stockhausen of the past, and KMRU, Abul Mogard, and Caterina Barbieri of the present.

Once again, the full album will be out on November 15th via InFiné and available on vinyl, CD, and all digital platforms. Meanwhile, as we anticipate the release, I recommend you revisit Murcof’s earlier works and collaborations, including the one titled Being Human Being with Erik Truffaz in 2014 and, most notably, with Vanessa Wagner, titled Statea from 2016. I will be doing the same!
