James Alaska is a London based composer. He began DJing at the age of 16, drawing inspiration from the likes of David Mancuso, Larry Levan and Danny Krivit. Over a period of 20 years he ran club nights and held DJ residencies in Liverpool and London. These included gigs with the likes of Andy Weatherall, Alfredo and Ladytron. He began making music around 2005. Having come full circle from DJing he now produces intricate and delicate noise-infused soundworks as The Alaska None, using lo-fi obfuscated fragments from vinyl and tape which are muted, contorted and re-contextualized.
This mix was put together working an hour here and there over a few months, with lots of editing and chopping along the way. It’s the kind of mix I’ve wanted to put together for a while, but haven’t had the time. I was a DJ before I was a composer, and that old school loft-era DJ’s ethos of ‘the blend’ was the criteria for selecting tracks i.e. I’ve tried to create an effortless flow of one track into another to create a sense of narrative, even when that meant heavy editing or silence. Hope you enjoy!
