Yes, it’s that time of the year when the craziness slows down (a bit?), leaving us some time for reflection and a bit of space for music. I will be spending the next week going over my favourite albums of 2024 before publishing them in my annual Best of the Year feature (commencing January 1st). But before we close this out, there are a few more fantastic sounds that I’d love to share with you, not the least of which is this entire 1h+ long concert by the German duo (and yes, brothers) Brueder Selke. Sebastian and Daniel recorded this live performance at Palác Akropolis in Prague at the beginning of 2022. Here, Sebastian plays the cello while Daniel is on the keyboard and synth modules as the two reflect on the lives shaped by socialism in the connected cultural dialogue of German and Czech people, sometimes structured and sometimes improvised, both in music and in their ability to react to daily life. Filmed by Roman Koblov and later mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri, the concert is a perfect medium to capture the essence of a live performance and the interaction of these two multi-instrumentalists with the audience. As usual, music will say here more than my words, so I will wish you some restful holidays and leave you with this film.

I first had the pleasure of meeting Daniel and Sebastian through a mutual contact when I photographed their performance at the Funkhaus back in 2019. Since then, we’ve worked together frequently, from studio shoots and live performances in Germany to their headline show at Palac Akropolis in Prague. Working with them has been a real privilege. I’ve been a fan of their music for years and have always admired their dedication to their craft and their contributions to the ambient and modern classical music scene, especially through their work with Q3Ambientfest. Their Prague show, despite the challenges of the Covid era, was an unforgettable experience, and I’m honoured to have been part of their creative journey.

The recording is also available on vinyl, compact disc, and as a digital download, which you can grab directly from the label’s Bandcamp page.
